Heparin will affect the coagulation of the patient, to make sure that we are hitting a steady target, an initial set of coags must be drawn, and preferably resulted before starting a heparin drip unless the patient is in respiratory distress. If they are in distress, start the heparin and give them oxygen. You do want the other labs drawn too if possible but the most important is coags.
