electrolyte location nursing mnemonic

Podcast Transcription

Okay, so, this is a mnemonic to help you remember the location of the electrolytes in the cells. So, potassium and sodium, it’s important to remember the intracellular, the extracellular, and it can be kind of hard to keep this straight in your mind. So, they’re the most abundant cations in the body and have an inverse relationship in regards to intracellular and extracellular concentrations. So, if you remember potassium’s normal value is 3.5 – 5.0 and it is primarily located within the cell. And then, sodium is primary located outside of the cell. And your sodium levels, the normal is 135 – 145. So, the mnemonic to help you remember this is PISO. PISO. Potassium in the cell. Sodium outside the cell. So, it’s a piece of cake to remember this. PISO. Potassium inside the cell. Sodium outside the cell. PISO, piece of cake. Potassium inside the cell. Sodium outside the cell.
